Capwell began as a senior design project at the University of Pennsylvania in 2021 when a teammate told us about the problem of abandoned and orphaned oil and gas (AOOG) wells he had come across in his hometown of Pittsburgh. We spoke with industry experts in government, private sector, and academia to understand what was currently done and how we could help.

We came up with Capwell, a modular, portable, and inexpensive solution to eliminate methane emissions from AOOG wells. In the two years since, we’ve raised ~$1.5M in pre-seed funding and completed 4 successful field trials. We are now piloting and commercializing our system.
